Review: My Top Two Dear America Books

So ya know the Dear America series? If not, they are a book series written in diary format about events in the past. There are about 50 kajillion books in the series, and I have not read them all, but I’ve read a few, and I’ll share my 2 favorites.

1. Dear America: Like the Willow Tree by Lois Lowry

This book is about eleven year old Lydia Pierce, who lives in 1918, when the Spanish influenza was spreading wildly. Both of Lydia’s parents plus her baby sister have died. (That part was so sad 😦 !!!!!) The two remaining Pierces (Lydia and her older brother Daniel) are sent to live with their Uncle Henry. Henry fears he won’t be able to take care of them, so he ships them off to a Shaker village. It was very interesting to see how the Shakers lived their lives, AND this book was written by an author I love, Lois Lowry! (If you haven’t read her book The Giver, then I would highly recommend it to you-it’s amazing) YAAAY XD!

2. Dear America: Journey to the New World by Kathryn Lasky

Remember Whipple is a Mayflower passenger in 1620. Remember is excited to be going to a new land, but she is shocked and fearful when lots of passengers, including her own mother, fall ill, Remember, along with many others, devotes most of her time to trying to save them, but can she? This book was really good, and it was a good example of show-not-tell. 😀
